The BLS classifies truck drivers into two basic categories according to the type of vehicle they drive: heavy versus light trucks. Heavy truck drivers, or tractor-trailer drivers, typically transport cargo farther distances (long-haul trucking). Light truck drivers usually do more local deliveries (also known as pick-up and delivery drivers). According to the latest available data (May 2009), Ohio heavy truck drivers earn a median hourly wage of $18.16. This equates to a median annual salary of $37,770. Ohio light truck drivers earn a median hourly wage of $12.92 (median annual salary of $26,880). In order to obtain a CDL license in Ohio, you must be at least 18 years old (21 years old for interstate trucking), have a valid Ohio driver's license, pass a vision exam and meet minimum medical standards. CDL applicants must then pass a written knowledge exam and a skills test, which includes a pre-trip vehicle inspection, a basic control test, and an on-road driving test. Depending on the class of license and endorsements you need, other knowledge and skills tests may be required--for example, to drive a combination vehicle, a school bus, a tanker truck, a truck with air brakes or to transport passengers. To transport hazardous materials (Hazmat), a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check is also required.
